  1. Focal Vocabulary is an interesting topic. On page 107 in our textbook, you can see a list of some insider’s terms for ice hockey vocabulary. For example, “biscuit” is an insider’s term for “hockey puck.” Can you think of any insider’s terms for vocabulary in certain domains? Can you think of any of these terms in English? Can you think of any of these terms in your native tongue?

Do you know the term hypernym? Do you know the term hyponym?

  2. In theater before a show, they “say break a leg”, meaning good luck, or curtain call when everybody appears at the end of the show. In Brazil, in soccer if you say that you have to do the homework means that you have to win the home game and high heel mean you are too confident.

  3. In Hawaii, we call sandals slippers. Also, we say that delicious food is ono. And we say that a building is ewa from another place.

Are these examples of focal vocabulary?

  4. Aren’t these Hawaiian expressions like in a dialect and not a specialized group of words used by special group of people with the same focus or interest as the skiers or hockey players?
